MoonPay launched autonomous payment agents on February 24, 2026, enabling AI systems to execute cryptocurrency transactions without human approval. Claude AI is simultaneously helping US forces identify and prioritize strike targets in Iran, MIT Technology Review reported.
The deployment marks a global transition from chatbots that answer questions to agents that take action. "Companies have AI that can answer questions, but not AI that can act," said MoonPay's Murali Swaminathan.
Three agent categories are emerging across international markets: financial agents executing transactions, tactical agents recommending military actions, and workflow agents automating professional services. Rad AI's healthcare system makes scheduling decisions for radiologists without human intervention.
Enterprise adoption requires new infrastructure unavailable in most markets. AI agents need API integrations, permission frameworks limiting action scope, and audit trails tracking autonomous decisions. These differ from text-generating chatbots deployed globally since 2022.
The shift changes development priorities worldwide. Traditional large language models optimize for accuracy and knowledge retrieval. Autonomous agents require decision-making frameworks and safety constraints preventing unintended consequences.
Liability questions remain unresolved across jurisdictions. When AI agents execute payments or influence military strikes, accountability frameworks must determine responsibility for autonomous decisions. Current regulations in the US, EU, and Asia treat AI as advisory tools, not decision-making entities.
Investment is flowing toward agentic platforms. MoonPay Agents targets developers building AI applications interacting with financial systems, creating a category beyond conversational AI tools dominating markets since ChatGPT's 2022 launch.
Q1-Q2 2026 will test global enterprise appetite for autonomous agents versus traditional chatbots. Early adoption in US military operations and international payment systems suggests high-stakes domains are moving fastest, despite greater risks and regulatory uncertainty across borders.
