A Sharp, Uneven Correction
Micron Technology fell as much as nearly 40% from its all-time high starting in July 2026, then clawed back 10% off its lows — leaving the stock still roughly 30% below its peak as of August 9.1 The move was part of a broader rout: on July 28, the Nasdaq 100 slid to a 2.75-month low as chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks sold off sharply, even as the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed to a 1.5-week high on the back of better-than-expected earnings from names like Coca-Cola and Sherwin-Williams.2 The divergence was stark that day: the S&P 500 edged up 0.05% and the Dow gained 0.738%, while the Nasdaq 100 dropped 1.12%.2 Amkor Technology added to the pressure, guiding third-quarter net sales to $1.95 billion–$2.05 billion, below the $2.11 billion analysts had penciled in.2
The pullback follows an extraordinary run. As of June 5, 2026, ProShares' 2x-leveraged Ultra Semiconductors ETF (USD) was up roughly 69% year-to-date — from $52.45 at the end of 2025 — and 196% over the trailing year, from $29.94 a year earlier.13 That leverage cuts both ways, and it is a large part of why the late-July drawdown in the underlying sector looked so violent in the ETFs built on top of it.
The Supply Side Hasn't Blinked
What makes the selloff notable is that it arrived alongside, not instead of, some of the sector's strongest supply-chain commitments of the year. On July 24, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung flew to San Francisco for a summit that drew Nvidia's Jensen Huang, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and the heads of Samsung, SK Group, Hyundai Motor and Naver; roughly $950 billion in new AI agreements were signed that day, part of a run of deals Nvidia has struck across Asia, the Middle East and Europe through 2026 to lock down chips, memory and power.3 Central to it: an expanded Nvidia-SK hynix partnership. "The expansion will include a co-develop opportunity for us on the next-generation SK Hynix AI memory, and this will help us secure a stable supply of HBM memory," said Raj Mirpuri.3
Washington moved the same week to put public money behind the domestic supply chain. On July 29, GlobalFoundries signed a letter of intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce under which the CHIPS Research and Development Office is expected to award the company $300 million to advance next-generation silicon photonics — the optical technology used to move data at high speed inside AI and high-performance-computing data centers.4 AMD, a GlobalFoundries customer, welcomed the move: "As AI systems scale, moving data efficiently is as critical as increasing compute performance. Silicon photonics and advanced packaging will be key to delivering the bandwidth, energy efficiency, and system-level connectivity required for the next generation of AI cluster infrastructure. We welcome [GF's continued U.S.-based investment]," said Mark Papermaster.4 It is worth flagging that this is a letter of intent, not a finalized award — the money is not yet obligated.
Consolidation Moves Ahead
The correction is also coinciding with sector consolidation rather than retreat. On July 28, Skyworks Solutions and Qorvo announced the expected executive leadership team for their combined company, to take effect once their pending merger closes. "Today's announcement reflects the strong partnership that has shaped our integration planning efforts from the very beginning. I am confident these leaders will help foster collaboration across our teams as we build on the engineering excellence, innovation, and customer focus that have long distinguish[ed]" the two companies, said Bob Bruggeworth.5
Two Sources of Customer-Side Uncertainty
Two developments feeding the market's caution sit on the customer side of the AI supply chain rather than the supply side. First, Apple confirmed that John Ternus, its hardware engineering chief, will become CEO on September 1 — the company's first new chief executive since Tim Cook succeeded Steve Jobs, with Cook moving to executive chairman.6 Second, and more directly tied to chip economics: Vicor Corporation's lead computing customer is set to transition from Gen 4 to Gen 5/VPD power-delivery technology in the second half of 2026, with a ramp expected before year-end.7 A node or generation transition at a lead customer is exactly the kind of execution risk that can show up as near-term revenue lumpiness even when the underlying demand trend is intact. Vicor itself remains a profitable, fast-growing business by the numbers: trailing-twelve-month revenue of $471.7 million, net income of $136.7 million, and a market capitalization of $11.3 billion as of the July 6, 2026 close.8
What the Smaller Names Are Telling Us
Away from the mega-cap names, the smaller suppliers show a similar mix of strength and noise. Solitron Devices reported fiscal 2027 first-quarter net sales up 101% to roughly $5.44 million, versus $2.70 million a year earlier, while net bookings fell 48% to $1.45 million from $2.80 million and backlog rose 28% to $23.34 million from $18.26 million.9 Management struck a confident tone on the trajectory: "As previously noted in our last press release, we expected higher revenues in this quarter and anticipate sales to continue to be at this level or greater for the remainder of the 2027 fiscal year."9 The same release noted a bookkeeping wrinkle worth surfacing precisely because it shows how granular the underlying data can get: "Net income in the fiscal 2027 first quarter was impacted by an increase to the contingent consideration of $0.33 million related to the MEI earn out payment based on a large order received after the end of the fiscal quarter."9
Board-level moves point the same direction. Allegro MicroSystems appointed Brian White, a veteran semiconductor-industry CFO, to its board effective June 17, 2026. "Brian's public-company CFO perspective, semiconductor industry experience and governance background make him a strong addition to our Board," said Joseph Martin.10 Allegro describes itself as "leveraging more than three decades of expertise in magnetic sensing and power ICs to propel electrification, automation, AI data center, and robotics forward."10 Further down the stack, Phison and Intel are pushing AI capability onto the PC itself: "AI PCs are evolving into platforms for more sophisticated local AI workloads, including agentic applications and larger MoE models that place increasing demands on memory capacity and responsiveness. Through our collaboration with Intel, aiDAPTIV helps expand the necessary memory available to AI wor[kloads]," said KS Pua.11 And in France, Bull and Kalray announced a networking collaboration for AI and HPC infrastructure on July 28: "Cet accord avec Bull confirme une nouvelle fois la pertinence de notre vision technologique et la qualité des innovations développées par nos équipes," said Éric Baissus — this agreement with Bull, he said, confirms the relevance of Kalray's technological vision and the quality of its teams' innovation.12
A note on how to weigh all of this: the corporate announcements cited above come from wire and press-release sources whose claims, when checked against primary records, have historically held up in a minority of cases — roughly a fifth to a third, depending on the outlet, in Via News's ongoing source-reliability tracking. That is a reason to treat company self-description and forward-looking language with appropriate skepticism, and precisely why the hard, checked figures — Micron's price move, Vicor's trailing financials, Solitron's reported sales and backlog — are the load-bearing facts in this piece, not the surrounding commentary.

Four threads worth tracking: whether Micron's bounce off its lows extends or the stock retests them, given it remains about 30% below its all-time high;1 how Apple's September 1 leadership handover to John Ternus plays out for its chip suppliers just as Vicor's own lead customer works through a Gen 4-to-Gen 5/VPD transition;6,7 whether GlobalFoundries' letter of intent with Commerce converts into a finalized $300 million award;4 and how quickly Skyworks and Qorvo can close their merger and integrate under the leadership team named this week.5
