It was the first time the UN Chiefs of Police gathered at the United Nations headquarters in New York. It all started back in February when the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, invited all the UN Chiefs of Police for the June UN-Police Summit.

This important forum provides a unique opportunity to promote the links between UN policing and national police services and to learn from different policing approaches.”

This morning, Ban Ki-moon inaugurated the event and took a group photo with the 113 Chiefs of Police at the UN General Assembly Hall. The summit had the presence of several international experts such as Mr. Jan Eliasson (Deputy Secretary-General), Mr. Hervé Ladsous (Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations), Mr. Yuri Fedotov (Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) and Mr. Jürgen Stock (Secretary-General of INTERPOL).
Talks topics were about the emerging global threats affecting UN peace operations, including organized crime, violence, extremism, corruption, and sexual exploitation.
According to the UN Cops Summit program, the meeting key outcomes aim at reinforcing strategic partnerships, evaluate operational requirements for the Leaders’ Summit on Peacekeeping (to be held in London in September 2016), and concrete follow-up actions and initiatives on UN policing.
The summit conclusions should be available in the next Secretary-General’s UN Police report by the end of 2016.
