Former Portuguese Prime Minister António Guterres is Uncontested Choice to Succeed Ban Ki-moon as U.N. Secretary-General

Former Portuguese PM and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, set to become the next UN Secretary-General.

All 15 ambassadors of the United Nations Security Council unanimously nominated Antonio Guterres to be the next Secretary-General. Guterres won 13 votes in his support and two abstentions, with zero votes against him.

In a formal vote next week, the Portuguese Antonio Guterres should be designated the successor of the South Korean Ban Ki-moon. Mr. Ban Ki-moon is stepping down at the end of 2016 after serving two terms.
