Amkor's Record Quarter Shows AI Boom Reshaping Chip Supply Lines Worldwide

Amkor Technology posted record second-quarter revenue as AI demand lifted chip packaging volumes, though weaker Q3 guidance points to uneven growth. Nvidia, the U.S. government, and chipmakers on three continents are all moving capital and consolidating to keep pace with AI infrastructure demand.

Amkor's Record Quarter Shows AI Boom Reshaping Chip Supply Lines Worldwide

Amkor Technology posted record second-quarter revenue as AI infrastructure demand pushed outsourced chip packaging volumes to new highs.1 The company's third-quarter guidance fell below Wall Street forecasts, a sign the AI boom is uneven across the global chip supply chain.1

The effects span continents. Amkor's packaging plants in South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines are central to how AI chips designed in the U.S. reach data centers worldwide. Memory makers are signing multi-year AI server DRAM deals, and packaging-equipment suppliers report record orders tied to advanced chip production.

Capital is moving across borders to secure that capacity. Nvidia has taken a $5 billion stake in Safe Superintelligence, betting AI compute demand keeps converting into chip orders. Washington has taken a CHIPS Act-linked equity stake in GlobalFoundries, whose fabs run in the U.S., Germany and Singapore — tying American public money to a chipmaker with an international footprint.

Consolidation is following the same demand curve. U.S. chipmakers Skyworks and Qorvo announced a merger, with leadership already named for the combined company. "Today's announcement reflects the strong partnership that has shaped our integration planning efforts from the very beginning," said Bob Bruggeworth.2 "I am confident these leaders will help foster collaboration across our teams as we build on the engineering excellence, innovation, and customer focus that have long distinguished both organizations."2

The build-out is drawing new cross-border alliances too. France's Kalray and Bull are teaming up to develop high-speed networks for AI and high-performance computing.3 "As AI continues to redefine infrastructure needs across every sector, we are excited to offer technologies that deliver greater performance, flexibility and efficiency," said Éric Baissus.3 The companies aim to build solutions for the next generation of AI and HPC systems.3

Leadership change is reaching Apple as well, where succession from Tim Cook toward Jeff Williams-adjacent leadership signals a shift even as global product cycles continue.4 Together, record earnings, cross-border equity stakes and international mergers show a semiconductor industry racing to match AI infrastructure demand — with pockets of caution at the edges.1
