"AI safety cannot wait for the August 2026 compliance deadline," European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager said March 11. High-risk AI providers must now submit safety assessments three months early under the EU AI Act, which took effect in February 2025.
Brussels is working with White House officials examining Defense Production Act powers to mandate safety standards for government contractors. The coordination marks the first transatlantic regulatory alignment since the EU law entered force.
