NVIDIA invested $2 billion in silicon photonics companies Coherent and Lumentum, targeting chip-to-chip communication bottlenecks in large-scale AI systems. Photonic interconnects deliver higher bandwidth and lower power consumption than electrical connections, addressing infrastructure constraints across global data centers.

The investment signals a worldwide semiconductor transformation. Neural processing units now outpace general-purpose chips for specialized AI tasks, while quantum computing efforts at Intel Labs and Australia's Diraq pursue problems beyond classical computing limits. Apple's M4 processor brings neural engines to consumer hardware globally, demonstrating commercial viability of specialized architectures.

Silicon carbide has become the standard for high-voltage power systems in electric vehicles worldwide. Wolfspeed supplies Toyota EV platforms and partners with Tier 1 automotive suppliers across multiple markets. The compound semiconductor handles power conversion more efficiently than traditional silicon, supporting vehicle electrification from Europe to Asia.

STMicroelectronics launched connectivity portfolios for Aliro 1.0, the unified digital access standard enabling smartphone-based building and vehicle entry. "ST offers the complete secure connectivity portfolio required to support all three Aliro configurations—from NFC only to NFC + Bluetooth Low Energy, up to NFC + Bluetooth LE + UWB for hands-free access," said Luca Verre.

In Singapore, Grab piloted high-accuracy GPS positioning with OPPO and Swift Navigation. Francesco Grilli called the collaboration "an important innovation in bringing high accuracy positioning to mobile devices," improving location precision for ride-hailing navigation in dense urban environments.

Lattice Semiconductor forecast Q1 revenue between $158 million and $172 million as enterprise customers deploy field-programmable gate arrays for AI inference workloads. FPGAs offer reconfigurable logic for custom AI acceleration tasks.

The convergence of photonics, neural processors, and compound semiconductors addresses AI infrastructure constraints across markets. Data transfer speeds, power efficiency, and specialized computation now determine competitive advantage as workload-specific architectures displace general-purpose computing paradigms globally.
